All the Familiar (Green) Faces

In the past, environmentalists may have shunned "mass market" stores because of how products have been sourced, transported and disposed of. These days, big box stores are making a real effort to be environmentally friendly—both in the products they offer and the way they operate. Here are some of my favorite places to shop that have made a commitment to environmental responsibility!

Target has long been known for helping the communities its stores are in, and last year, the company announced a new commitment to sustainability, promising to expand their selection of sustainable products and minimize their carbon footprint. Target offers eco-friendly home goods, organic groceries, non-toxic household cleaners, and even all-natural beauty products. If you bring your things home in reusable bags, Target will give you a five-cent discount for each bag you use.

Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel has a huge selection of eco-friendly products, from a bamboo digital bath scale for the bathroom to a hutch made with sustainable mango wood for your dining space. But in addition to its products, the company itself is making environmental responsibility a priority.

West Elm

West Elm say that they “believe small changes lead to bigger ones,” and that they aren't willing to compromise on style or quality. By highlighting sustainable products while also keeping prices affordable, Target it helping to bring eco awareness into the mainstream.

West Elm is great for organic bedding and recycled glass vases and bottles in all shapes and sizes.

When shopping on the website, look for the “West Elm green” label on products that are either sustainable, organic, or made from FSC certified wood or paper!

Pottery Barn

Pottery Barn's Web site has a large section devoted to green, chock full of green info. Under their "Environmental Commitment," you can shop their green products, see videos about their practices, and get green tips on how to create an environmentally friendly home. Did you know that washing bedding in cold water saves energy and it’s gentler on the cotton fibers? Neither did we! I love their selection of reclaimed wood furniture, like the Camden Coffee Table. Like many others, the company has started to recycle in its offices and is using smaller boxes and conserving fuel during the shipping process. Going green never looked better!
