My Dear Fabulistas! I know you’re keeping yourself busy this holiday season with all the gatherings to attend and the soirees you’re going to host to perfection. In the midst of all the preparation and a packed schedule, you must remember to rest up and recharge! In order to enjoy this time of the year to the fullest, you’ll need to find quick and easy ways to stay calm and centered. Creating a bathroom spa retreat is just what you need!

How do you make sure your bathroom is designed for spa purposes? The first step in achieving a Zen-type environment in your bathroom is to create space by decluttering. Remove items you no longer use, only keep the essentials and pieces that contribute to an overall relaxing atmosphere. Space and light should be the key elements. Adding a shelving unit to hold your beauty products and towels will instantly create that spa feeling while keeping the essentials within easy reach.

Your new bathroom spa retreat’s color scheme should inspire relaxation and calm… so use colors like white and eggshell to visually expand the space. Other nature-inspired colors like greens, blues and browns can bring in a much needed organic feel. Remember to incorporate natural elements such as fresh flowers, plants, and products made of natural materials. Plants purify the air and usually thrive in the bathrooms, while fresh flowers bring in a delightfully refreshing aroma and a pop of color. Storage pieces, like baskets made out of hemp or straw, add an element of Zen and purity, as do wooden stools and benches.

The lighting should be softened for a restful and soothing effect on your senses. I suggest smaller dimmer lights overhead or around the base of your free-standing tub. Have enough candles around for those times when you want to forego artificial lighting altogether. I personally prefer large windows in the bathroom… there’s nothing like those lush views while you’re in the tub to evoke a sense of ease and transcendence.

The centerpiece of your bathroom is the tub. Choose the shape and finish that is most soothing and nurturing, such as a cocoon-like shape with matte or gloss finish. Some prefer more angular and structured with high polish and sheen… the tub is a highly personal choice, go for what speaks to you and makes you feel most at ease. Place it in the middle of the bathroom or by the window, it all depends on what you wish to rest your eyes on while soaking!

If you’re a fan of aromatherapy like me, I like to pick a scent that’s more subtle and appeals to me personally. Be sure to use it across all of your bathroom products such as essential oils, soaps, lotions and candles. Try the variety of nature-inspired fragrances, and go for what feels most you, Fabulistas! Your bathroom spa gives you the time and space to indulge yourself. So that when you’re diving back into the Holiday frenzy, you’re recharged and replenished, making the best of this joyous season!
