Simplifying Color: How To Pick Flattering Tones

Hello Fabulistas! I've been thinking a lot about color this weekend. I've heard from many of you that you have trouble picking colors for your home. Because I work with color every day, I've come up with a few ways to figure out which colors suite my clients best. Here are a few ways I pick fab, flattering tones: Check out your closet The first thing I tell my clients is to take a look inside their closet. What colors do you see the most? Sometimes we feel we know what colors we want on our walls, but that's entirely different from what we wear. The colors we wear let us know what we feel comfortable in, and your home should always feel comfortable! How to pick flattering tones

Cool or warm tones? Once you've picked your best colors, decide weather warm tones or cool tones work best for you. There's a quick way to narrow it down. Do you look best in silver or gold jewelry? If you choose silver, cool tones work best for you. If gold is your thing, then warm tones are the way to go. This will help you move forward while decorating your home. How to pick flattering tones

Work with your color tones Once you've narrowed down your comfort colors, pick several tones of those colors. I like to use softer colors on walls and richer tones in furniture and accessories. If you see a lot of blue in your closet, pick a lighter shade of blue for the walls and a saturated or darker blue for upholstery or pillows. How to pick flattering tones

Look at the color wheel In order to pick accent colors for your main colors, just look at the color wheel. Depending on the look, I like to pick complementary colors as my accent colors, which are colors opposite from each other on the color wheel. Sometimes, though, analogous colors are the most flattering to one another. Those appear next to each other on the color wheel. The best way to decide which works for your home is to experiment.
