I’m especially flattered when clients come back to me again and again. In this case, a client whose home I had designed was opening a new restaurant in partnership with a chef. Their concept: to create a home away from home, complete with a menu featuring what we all love most: delicious comfort food.
I took that idea and ran with it. I created a concept that mimicked areas of domestic living spaces: the family room, the formal dining room, and a bustling kitchen, for example. The theme created a warm, welcoming vibe and allowed for a cohesive flow throughout the design. Because the location was in proximity to Columbia University, we kept students and faculty transplants in mind to make them feel welcomed and right at home.
I sought out rich, residential-feeling fabrics that would stand up to a restaurant’s demands. I found gorgeous prints that all worked together—all fire rated!—and paired them with the rich color palette and comforting, homey details. From the charming roosters to the hand-painted “rug” on the floor, every detail was designed to evoke a cozy feeling of home.
