Vienna Through the Eyes of a Learning Intern

Before I started interning for Robin Baron Design, I was abroad in London for the past spring semester. Normally a student in the Big Apple, I was thrust into a European adventure for some of the most memorable moments of my life. Continuing my learning experience on this side of the pond as an intern for an interior design company, the more I come to appreciate everywhere I have been and seen. I find myself seeing the world through a different set of eyes, finding inspiration in new places. As many others who have left a place that has become so dear to them, I have gone through periods of really missing my English home and all the places I went to see. As I reflect on my experience, I could not help but want to share a spot in particular that absolutely amazed me then and even more now. It is truly inspirational. I was in Wien, more commonly known as Vienna, during spring break. I was with a few friends exploring the Austrian city when one of us decided to go and see the architectural oddity that is the Hundertwasser House, an Expressionist housing project of sorts (it's a series of apartments) designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. I arrived at the Hundertwasser House completely unaware of what I was about to see. As we approached, the bold colors began to come into view and I realized just how amazing this apartment building was going to be. I was enchanted by the trees overgrown on the roof and stairways, and the vines that wrapped themselves around the windows.

Since 1985, people have come to see the apartment buildings built by Hundertwasser. The colors and ornaments decorating the building draw natives and visitors alike. Brightly colored tiles cover the exterior in sporadic portions and often lack pattern. A fountain sets the scene, bringing serenity to the bustling area. The brick walk literally continues right into the fountain, as if asking visitors to stroll seamlessly into the running water.

I just love the balconies of the apartments! Small, but none-the-less beautiful, black railing balconies add just the perfect touch. I saw so many sites in Vienna, but this was one of my favorite places. I never knew apartment buildings could be so fun and fabulous from the exterior (although I cannot vouch for the inside!). Great design isn't always about symmetry, it's about balance.

Create equal but different visual interest on both sides of your space by playing with varying heights, weights, and quantities of your objects on opposing sides.
