Raving about Rooftops

The great thing about New York is that no matter where you are, fabulous design follows…from the depths of the subway to the tip of the Empire State Building. Some of my favorites, though, are the ones that are easiest to miss when you’re strolling down a busy city street…the amazing rooftops! For those lucky enough to have sky-high access, the rooftop scene has become a go-to for trends in gardening, chic décor…even urban farming! And if you thought that marvelous rooftops were an exclusive commodity, boy are you in for a surprise. I found some great, accessible rooftops for you to check out…all open to the public! Brooklyn Grange I bet you didn’t know that the biggest soil rooftop farm in the world was just a cab ride away! This place is so cool…it covers a 65,000 square foot rooftop in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The farm produces thousands of plants each season, and they are sold all over the community in stands, restaurants, and retail stores. I’m all about locavorism! They’ve got hens, too, so don’t be surprised if you hear a little “cluck cluck” from above during a Brooklyn saunter.

Hudson Hotel Sky Terrace Talk about the perfect place to relax…this place has got hammocks, sunlight, cocktails, and gorgeous views of New York City! Best of all, it’s open to the public, so you don’t have to stay at the Hudson to enjoy this fabulous sky-high treat. They’ve even got wi-fi! Metropolitan Museum of Art “Cloud City” Rooftop Exhibit Why keep art indoors...or at the ground level, for that matter? Argentinean artist Tomás Saraceno goes above and beyond the ordinary (literally!) with his whimsical “Cloud City” rooftop exhibit, atop the Met from now through November. We know I love all things bold, and from the looks of it, Mr. Saraceno definitely knows how to have fun with modern art! People are reaching for the stars when it comes to rooftop design...and I'm loving it! Keep expanding your horizons, New Yorkers!
