Translating Trends: Sunburst Mirrors

My favorite design trends are those which can be tailored to fit an individual's personal style, whether that be traditional, contemporary, rustic, industrial or none of the above! After all, what fun would a trend be if only fans of one style got to enjoy it? One of these versatile trends that comes to mind is the sunburst mirror, sometimes known as a starburst mirror. Sunburst mirrors are certainly not new to the design scene. In fact, they date back to the 17th century, when France’s Louis XIV (a.k.a. The Sun King and an avid lover of design) would vainly stare into his sunburst mirror every morning, enjoying the rays that radiated from his face. Since then, their popularity has risen and set throughout the centuries, but never seemed to completely burn out, largely thanks to their versatility. In America, this celestial style became popular in the mid-20th century, and has since taken on a variety of guises including traditional, contemporary, rustic, and more. Country Chic Mirrors made of natural elements, such as Ballard Designs' oversized mango wood mirror, would feel right at home as the focal point in a spare, farmhouse-inspired design.

Nautical The sun and the sea may be complete opposites, but they are a match in mirror form. Rays of rustic beauty shine from Crate and Barrel's beachy sunburst, made from hand-harvested driftwood -- perfect in a cozy sea-side cottage. Vintage Because of their longevity in the design scene, true antique sunburst mirrors aren't terribly hard to come by. If you're in a time pinch or aren't up for "the hunt," opt for ones with a vintage-inspired design, such as this three-set mirror collection by Suzanne Kasler for Ballard Designs. The antique gold finish gives them a gorgeous time-worn vintage feel!

Traditional Inspired by the Louis XVI-era, this Wistera number is a traditional take on the original sunburst mirror that was so favored by his predecessor. Industrial Minimal design with maximum impact allows sunburst mirrors to easily translate into the industrial style. This metallic mirror from Z Gallerie would add some industrial glam to a city loft.

Glamour A sunburst mirror fittingly suits the glamorous Hollywood Regency style, and naturally adds the desired sparkle to any room. This gilded mirror from Hobby Lobby incorporates a luxe factor at a budget-friendly price. Contemporary Even with its dated roots, sunburst mirrors can look contemporary by simply adding detailing to the rays, such as the capiz shells on this one from Target. The shells act as reflectors, and will cause soft light to dance onto the walls–literally lighting up the room.

Regardless of your design palette, the sunburst mirror will brighten any room!
