Translating Trends: Man's Best Friend

Animal imagery has always played a big role in home design (whooo can forget those years of the owl?), and I've seen two new animals running wild on the US design scene: dogs and peacocks. Even here at the London Design Festival this week, dog prints, silouettes, statues and imagery has been spotted EVERYWHERE! Dogs are popping up on accessories from pillows to plates, so it’s time to unleash some doggie details into your own home! Here's how to do it: Even those that are allergic will have no problem snuggling with this pooch pillow from West Elm. Noted pet portraitist Scott Lifshutz created a series of images exclusively for West Elm, including this happy pack of four-legged friends. Best of all, they won’t shed on your bed or couch!

Whether you’re describing your canine or your culinary, this Best in Show dish towel from Anthropologie will add whimsy to any kitchen. The design was hand-screened and stitched on an antique sewing machine by UK designer Poppy Treffry in the tiny, charming United Kingdom village of Cornwall.

Before you chew those cords out of sheer frustration, keep them organized in this cute canine container by YLiving. Created by designer Gabrial Nigro after a trip to a friend’s flat where cables had run amok, this fun and functional piece is truly man’s best friend. Are you a Boston Terrier aficionado? Or maybe basset hounds are more your pace. With a wide range of breeds to choose from, each pooch print from Ballard Designs is designed by Vivienne and Sponge, a dog-loving husband-and-wife team, and is hand-colored on antiqued parchment, embellished with notes on the breed’s special characteristics. Serve canapés to your canine friends on this charming plate created exclusively for Anthropologie from French designer Nathalie Lete. Depicting un chien, it instantly adds Parisian whimsy to your tabletop.

Dogs bark in all languages of style. Whether your taste is modern or traditional, you can still cover your walls in doggie details. Designer Wallcoverings has a dog toile pattern for the traditionals and a flock velvet wallpaper depicting silhouettes of our favorite breeds for those that prefer a more modern design.

Great design isn't always about symmetry, it's about balance.

Create equal but different visual interest on both sides of your space by playing with varying heights, weights, and quantities of your objects on opposing sides.
