A Pile of Tiles!

Have extra tile from a design project and not sure what do to with it? You can't return them, and if you're like me, you just can't bear to toss them in the garbage. The good news is that, if you are thinking outside the "bathroom", there are plenty of great ways to utilize your leftover tiles. First, assess the amount of tile that you're working with. Be realistic about what you can do with what you have. The idea is to use what you have, not to have to go out and purchase more tile to finish your new project. The shape of your new tile dictates the best application for it. Whether you're working with mosaic, subway, 4x4 or 12x24 tile, if you can imagine it, you can create it! Here are a few ideas to put left over tile to work: Fire it Up Reuse large amounts of tile in unexpected areas. In one of my projects, I chose a pearlescent mosaic tile from Porcelanosa for a teenage girl's bathroom. After the installation, we had leftover tile that needed the perfect home. To carry the glam look throughout the bedroom suite, I surrounded the room's existing fireplace with the extra tile. In juxtaposition with the turquoise walls, this tile created the perfect balance of "cool" in the teen's room.

Light it Up Find a lamp from a thrift store, flea market or a home decor shop like Homegoods that has flat, clean edges where tile will adhere easily. Avoid curves at all costs! Glue on mosaic or subway tiles to create a fun lighting fixture. Hot & Heavy Put tiles to work in the kitchen as trivets to place your hot pots and dishes on. To put a fun spin on a tablescape, line several rows of tiles down the length of your table to create a totally unexpected table runner. Hand paint or use a marker on white ceramic tiles to act as place cards or even to number tables at a larger celebration.

Turn a tired old table into a popping piece of art by painting it a bold new color that complements your left over tile. This is a great project to use small or large tile alike. This great tutorial on the DIY Network website will have you patting yourself on the back before you know it!

A Place for Everything Refashion extra pieces of tiles or even cut sections of your extra mesh-mounted mosaic tiles to make coasters for your living or family room. Don't worry if you have mismatched tiles - the more color and shape you have the better to make the look uniquely yours! Important to remember, back the tiles with cork or felt to ensure that your furniture stays scratch-free!
